What does fuse board replacement cost in Bristol?
The consumer unit replacement cost depends mainly on how many circuits your home has, the type of board fitted, and what the testing turns up. As a guide for the Bristol area in 2026:

A few things move the price within those ranges:
- Number of circuits. Every circuit needs its own protective device and its own test results. A house with an electric shower, EV charger and garage supply simply takes longer than a two-bed flat.
- RCBOs or shared RCDs. A full RCBO board costs a little more in parts than a basic split-load board. We fit RCBOs as standard, and we explain why below.
- Earthing and bonding. If the gas and water pipes are not properly bonded to the earthing system, that has to be put right before a new board can be certified. It is a common extra in homes last rewired before the 1980s.

Around Downend and Mangotsfield we see plenty of interwar semis still running on their original rewirable boards, often on a wooden backboard in the garage or under the stairs. What’s included in the price
A proper fuse board replacement is more than swapping one box for another. The price includes:
- Removal and disposal of the old board
- A new metal-cased consumer unit (a requirement in homes since 2016, because metal contains a fire far better than the old plastic cases)
- An RCBO for every circuit, plus a surge protection device (SPD)
- Dead testing of every circuit before the new board is connected, then live testing once it is energised

If a quote comes in far below the ranges above, ask what has been left out. A board swap without full testing and certification is not a compliant job, and it catches up with you when you sell or claim on insurance.
Why we fit RCBOs and surge protection as standard
Most budget board swaps use a split-load board: two RCDs (residual current devices — the safety switches that cut the power quickly if electricity leaks to earth), each protecting half the circuits in the house. It meets the regulations, but when one appliance develops a fault, the RCD covering that half of the house trips and you lose several circuits at once. The freezer, the router and the lights can all go off because of one faulty kettle.
An RCBO combines that shock protection with a circuit breaker in one device, one per circuit. A fault on the shower circuit trips the shower circuit and nothing else. Fault-finding is quicker too, because the tripped device points straight at the problem circuit. Surge protection is the other thing we build in. An SPD sits inside the board and absorbs brief voltage spikes, from lightning activity or switching on the supply network, before they reach your appliances. Modern homes are full of sensitive electronics: TVs, laptops, boiler controls, EV chargers, solar inverters. Damaging spikes are rare, but an SPD is cheap insurance. It is also what the current Wiring Regulations expect: since the 2022 amendment to BS 7671, surge protection should be fitted when a consumer unit is replaced unless the homeowner formally declines it. What happens on the day
A straightforward fuse board replacement is a half-day job. Allow the full day if testing turns something up. Here is roughly how the morning runs:
- Setup and checks (30–45 minutes). We confirm which circuit feeds what, check the earthing and bonding, and get everything laid out before any power goes off.
- Power off (around two to four hours). The whole house is off while the old board comes out and the new one goes in. Plan any work-from-home calls around this window.
- Testing. Every circuit is tested dead before it is connected, then live-tested once the board is energised. The results go on your certificate.
- Labelling and handover. Every circuit gets a proper label, we show you how to reset an RCBO and use the test buttons, and we tidy up before we leave.
One thing worth flagging: to change a board safely, the incoming supply must be isolated. If your meter has an isolator switch, that is simple; if not, the main fuse has to be dealt with, which can involve your electricity supplier. We check this at quote stage so there are no surprises.
Signs you need a new fuse board
Fuse boards have no fixed expiry date, but some things tell us a board is overdue:
- Rewirable fuses. If your board still takes fuse wire, it is decades old and offers nothing like modern protection.
- A wooden backboard. Common in older Bristol homes, and a sign nothing has been touched for a very long time.
- No test buttons. No test button means no RCD protection, which is the device that protects people from electric shock rather than just protecting the cables.
- Buzzing, heat or scorch marks. These need looking at promptly. If you ever smell burning at the board, turn the main switch off if it is safe to do so and call an electrician straight away.
- You are adding big loads. An EV charger, electric shower or garden office supply often needs board work before the new circuit can go in.

Certification and notification
Two pieces of paperwork should follow every fuse board replacement. First, an Electrical Installation Certificate (EIC) recording the work and the test results for every circuit. Second, because changing a consumer unit is notifiable work under Part P of the Building Regulations in England, building control must be told and you should receive confirmation for your records.
We sort both as part of the price. Keep them somewhere safe. Your solicitor will ask for them when you sell, and your insurer may want them after a claim. If someone offers to swap your board without the paperwork, you are left with an uncertified installation that costs more to put right later than it saves on the day.

How long does a fuse board replacement take?
Around half a day for a straightforward swap: roughly two to four hours with the power off, plus setup, testing and labelling either side. Older installations sometimes reveal faults during testing, which can stretch the job into a full day. We always tell you before doing any extra work, and what it will cost.
Will I be without power all day?
No. The power is usually off for two to four hours while the old board comes out and the new one goes in. The rest of the visit, setup beforehand and testing and labelling afterwards, happens with minimal disruption. Boil the kettle first, keep the fridge and freezer doors shut, and they will be fine.
Do I need an EICR before replacing my fuse board?
Not usually, because a board change includes testing every circuit anyway.
