Terms of Service

Last updated: 4 August 2026

1. About these terms

These terms apply to work carried out by Shortman Electrical and to your use of this website. They are written for domestic customers — homeowners, landlords and tenants — which is who we usually work for.

Nothing in these terms reduces your legal rights as a consumer. Where anything here conflicts with your statutory rights, your statutory rights apply.

2. Our services

We provide domestic electrical services, including:

  • Consumer unit (fuseboard) upgrades and replacements
  • Full and partial rewires
  • Additional sockets, lighting and dedicated circuits
  • Kitchen and bathroom electrical installation
  • Inspection, testing and certification
  • Fault finding, repairs and emergency call-out

All work is carried out to the current wiring regulations (BS 7671) and certified where the work requires it.

3. Quotes and estimates

Quotes are valid for 30 days from the date of issue unless we state otherwise, and there is no charge for providing one.

A quote is based on what we can see and reasonably assess before starting. Older properties in particular can hide problems behind walls and under floors. If we find something that changes the cost, we will stop, explain it, and agree the additional work and price with you before continuing. You will never receive a bill for extra work you did not agree to.

4. Your right to cancel

If you agree to work in your home or elsewhere away from our business premises, or entirely at a distance (by phone, email or through this website), you have a legal right to cancel within 14 days of entering into the agreement, under the Consumer Contracts (Information, Cancellation and Additional Charges) Regulations 2013. You do not have to give a reason.

If you ask us to begin work during that 14-day period and then cancel, we may charge you a fair amount for the work already carried out.

Separately from that right, if you simply need to move or cancel a booked appointment, we ask for at least 24 hours' notice so we can offer the slot to someone else.

5. Payment

  • For smaller jobs, payment is due on completion.
  • For larger projects, we may ask for a deposit before starting, and will agree that with you in advance.
  • We accept bank transfer and cash.

If an invoice is not paid by its due date, we may charge interest on the overdue amount at a reasonable rate until it is paid.

6. Guarantees

We guarantee our workmanship on the installations and repairs we carry out. Manufacturer warranties on parts and equipment are passed on to you.

Our guarantee does not cover:

  • Damage caused by misuse, accident or neglect
  • Alterations or repairs made by anyone else after we finish
  • Normal wear and tear
  • Faults in existing installations that we did not install

This guarantee is in addition to your statutory rights under the Consumer Rights Act 2015, which entitles you to services carried out with reasonable care and skill.

7. Access and safety

So we can work safely and finish on time, please make sure we can get to the areas we need, and that pets and children are kept clear of the work area. Some work requires the power to be switched off for a period; we will tell you in advance when that is likely and for roughly how long.

8. If something goes wrong

If you are unhappy with any part of our work, please tell us as soon as possible using the contact details below. We will respond within 5 working days and do our best to put it right.

9. Liability

We are responsible for loss or damage you suffer that is a foreseeable result of us breaking these terms or failing to use reasonable care and skill.

We do not exclude or limit our liability in any way where it would be unlawful to do so. This includes liability for death or personal injury caused by our negligence, for fraud, and for any breach of your statutory rights as a consumer.

We are not liable for loss or damage that was not foreseeable, or for pre-existing faults in an installation we did not carry out.

We hold public liability insurance.

10. Website content

The text, photographs and design on this website belong to Shortman Electrical. Please do not reproduce or republish them without our permission. Photographs of completed work are of jobs we have carried out.

11. Changes to these terms

We may update these terms from time to time. The version published on this page when you agree to work with us is the version that applies to that work.

12. Governing law

These terms are governed by the law of England and Wales, and disputes may be brought in the courts of England and Wales.
